Sometimes people tell me I take vacations to 'crazy places'. I admit that sometimes we travel off the beaten path. But it's always for a reason. There is always an activity, or a site, a beach, food, drink...something about the culture you want to experience first hand. Last week, my husband Matt and I went to Europe to the country of Georgia. It's next to Russia, Azerbaijan and Albania. Georgia is mountainous, and land locked. We went for the wine. Yup, the wine. Georgia has been making wine for 8,000 years. Of course we wanted to experience the food, and the churches and all the amazing things go along with extremely old places. I know...this is Sarah's Beer Blog. Let's be honest. Even though I went someplace famous for its wine, I DRANK BEER TOO! Georgia has some classic lager and pilsner styles. It also has a burgeoning craft beer scene. Some of the craft beer comes in stopper cap bottles, like Grolsch. Very cool. While they have a great growing environment for grapes, I don't think anyone is growing much hops. Malt was more prevalent than hops. None of the beer made me want to stuff my backpack full of it to bring home. But it's always fun to try the new styles. Especially when the bottles don't always have Latin lettering, making them impossible to read! You never really knew much about what you were drinking. No beer made its way into my bags...the wine on the other hand....
