Legendary music producer Jack Douglas died on Monday (May 11) at age 80.

Known for his work with music icons such as Aerosmith, Cheap Trick and John Lennon, Douglas passed away "peacefully," according to a Facebook post shared by his family on Tuesday.

"As many of you who follow him know, he produced great music and lived a colorful life," the post read. "We know that he touched many of your lives; he will be missed."

Douglas played an instrumental role in numerous early Aerosmith albums that would go on to become classic records, including Toys in the Attic, Draw the Line, Get Your Wings and Rocks. His producing work with the rock band would lead to him being called the "sixth member" of the group.

He also worked closely with John Lennon and wife Yoko Ono, even recording with the late Beatles member the day he was murdered in 1980. Douglas also notably served as the engineer for Lennon's iconic album Imagine.

"We sat there until dawn just listening to different things that John had done," Douglas told PEOPLE in 2023 of the day he died. "And that was the only service that there was. It was just Yoko and I."

Ono paid tribute to her late friend on Tuesday (May 12) via her Instagram account. "Rest in peace, Jack Douglas," she captioned a photo of the two of them.
