Sarah's Beer of the Week 04.23.2020

I just drank a really really old beer. Not as in, it had been physically brewed long ago, but the brewery itself is ancient. Samuel Smith's Brewery was founded in 1758. Pretty impressive. You can find their beer in 18 ounce bottles, or now in 15 ounce cans. They brew some traditional English IPA, which taste very different from our IPA's. And they use hops with names like Fuggle's and Goldings. Also quite different from what we in the PNW use. The way they brew is fascinating. They use horses to deliver beer in their community of Tadcaster. They have full time coopers to make barrels for aging. They are using the same yeast strain since the 1800's. Some real history here. This week I drank the Pure Brewed Organic Lager. I had no idea until I read the can that this is a vegan beer, and is certified The Vegan Society. I wanted a lighter beer, but something with more oomph than a Rainier. Mission accomplished. There is a bit more hop essence going on. Not a hoppy beer, mind you, just a bit more complexity. It's crisp and delicious. And fun to drink a beer steeped in so much history. Still looks like it will be a while before we'll traveling out of the country again. so I'll drink this and look at pictures of old England in the meantime. Ta!
