In the History of Rock, it’s a big day for the Beatles, but you can probably say that about any day.
In 1961 – The Beatles first appeared at The Cavern Club in Liverpool; they would go on to make a total of 292 other appearances. They were paid less than 7 dollars for the lunchtime appearance, and George Harrison nearly didn’t get in because he was wearing jeans.
In 1964 – The Beatles made their first appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show, which was watched by over 73 million people. Before their performance, Beatles’ manager Brian Epstein told Sullivan, “I would like to know the exact wording of your introduction.” Sullivan replied, “I would like you to get lost.” The show had received over 50,000 applications for the 728 seats in the TV studio.
And in 2012 – Paul McCartney got his own star on the Hollywood’s Walk of Fame, becoming the last of the four Beatles to get the honor. His star was placed outside the Capitol Records building, alongside those of band members John Lennon, George Harrison and Ringo Starr.
