Metallica's Plays A Surprise Show For 500 & New Music: Classic Rock Update

Metallica played a special intimate concert last night at a 500-capacity theater, The Independent, in downtown San Francisco.

The heavy metal giants, who are celebrating the 30th anniversary of their mega-selling self-titled album, shared the news of the last-minute gig via social media yesterday and the $20 tickets immediately sold out.

This is not the first time Metallica has played a "secret" show in its hometown. Back in 2003, they did four free concerts at The Fillmore after announcing the dates on their fan site.

The Foo Fighters and Jane's Addiction have given us years of great music, and members of both bands have united in a new group planning to give us plenty more. NHC is the new moniker for the band started up by Foo Fighters’ Taylor Hawkins and Jane's Addiction’s Dave Navarro and Chris Chaney and they are starting their musical journey with two new songs hitting ears everywhere today.

The first song, "Feed the Cruel," is the more upbeat of the two, with Hawkins taking lead vocals while an accompany video serves as a performance piece watching the trio working out the song together. The second new song, "Better Move On," is a more solemn and melodic track. Hawkins, who also fronts the Coattail Riders, handles lead vocals on this track as well.

In the History of Rock in 1967 – The Doors appear on the Ed Sullivan Show. Sullivan asks Jim Morrison to omit the line “Girl, we can’t get much higher” from the song “Light My Fire.” Morrison agrees… then sings it anyway.

On The Very Same Day – The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour, has one of the greatest rock TV moments ever, Keith Moon rigs his drum set to explode at the end of the Who’s performance of “My Generation.” The resulting detonation cuts Moon’s leg, singes Pete Townshend’s hair, and does some serious damage to his hearing.

And in 1969 – Radio and print media on both sides of the Atlantic are full of stories that say Paul McCartney is dead. He was supposedly killed in a car accident in Scotland on November 9th, 1966 and that a double has been taking his place for public appearances. In fact, Paul and his girlfriend Jane Asher were on vacation in Kenya at the time. When a reporter contacted Paul at his Scottish farm, McCartney's reaction was, "Do I look dead? I'm fit as a fiddle."
