The number of new breweries in Washington is astounding. And the new styles that keep cropping up! It's fun to try all the new beer. But sometimes the pull to try something brand new means you can overlook, or forget about some of the classics. The really good beer that has been brewed for ages.
Imagine my surprise and delight when my buddy Leon came over for a backyard hang with one of those beers. He brought over Anchor Steam Tall Boys. I haven't had Anchor Steam in YEARS. So long, I couldn't even remember what it tasted like. See what I mean? The good and the bad of all the new beer. Anchor Steam is out of Northern California and they first starting brewing in 1896. No, that isn't a typo. The 1800's. It's referred to as a 'steam beer' or 'California Common'. But there is nothing 'common' about the flavor! It pours copper hued, with a nice head. Great smell, which maybe sounds snobby, but I've had a few beers lately that had a seriously off-putting smell despite tasting good. Nice malt, bready, and hoppy aroma. And finally...the sip...it was great! Perfect balance of hops/malt/light bitterness. Highly drinkable. DARN good beer. Why have I forgotten about you for so long Anchor Steam?
I mentioned that Leon brought over tall boys. 19.2 ounces. I thought, huh, I better check the ABV since this is a big beer. To my surprise, just 4.9%. You'd never guess it. It's full bodied. Full flavored. And you don't have to share the big can!! Win win.
Yes I advocate trying new beer. Yes I love supporting local breweries and any brewer giving it a go. But this was a nice reminder not to forget the classics. The beers that are still brewing after over 100 years. Next time you see an Anchor Steam pick some up, you won't be disappointed.
